But HONEY.

My faithful red sandals are on their way out, so when I spotted these at Goodwill the other day,
I was thrilled!

When I realized that I would have some good solid reasoning to present to the Rugged Mountain Man when I got home, in the cart they went!

But HONEY, I had to buy them!!!!  They had my NAME on them!!!!

I did get a laugh from the Rugged Mountain Man on that.

Current Favorite Gift Idea

For her 10th birthday last year, Blossom3 was given this sweet little necklace by her aunt, uncle, and Sprout cousins.

The gift box said, "10 gems; one for each spunky year!"

There's another cute version in fun and trendy packaging here.

Last August when Blossom1 turned 15, her sisters thought Blossom3's necklace was so cool, they purchased this pretty 15 year old version for Blossom1.  She's been thrilled because it matches with everything and can be dressed up or down on a whim.

In December I was stumped on what to get my purple-loving mother-in-law for her birthday.  I stumbled across this lovely ombre amethyst version and HAD to get it for her.  Everyone here agreed that she'd love it.  And she did!

When the Rugged Mountain Man asked what I wanted for my birthday, I spotted this unique and classy raw diamond version that I thought would be an excellent edition to my necklace repertoire.  It came in very impressive packaging!  I love the unusual look of the raw Herkimer diamonds.

Search "ombre bar necklace" on Etsy and you'll find a pleasant plethora of necklaces in a range of price points and sumptuous hues.  Who could resist these?!

Aqua!!!!!!

How bout fire?

I had to share my latest favorite heartfelt gifts to give.  Go ahead, copy us and order one!

Some Fun Fall Fashion

I've seen some great outfits lately and I wanted to pass them along to you.

The classy fashion friend had this outfit on when we bumped into each other at piano lessons the other day.  It was a ray of sunshine in our day to chat and catch up with her and her lovely daughters.  You might recall that the classy fashion friend also has an affinity for vests, which is evident in this outfit.  I particularly admired the pop of color in her pashmina scarf against a backdrop of basic neutrals.

Blossom3 picked out an adorable outfit for church the other day. I was definitely having a "I would SO wear that" moment!  She's been putting her abundance of striped shirts to good use!

Blossom2 was sporting a super fun outfit for Bible Quiz last week.  This bright orange theme fits so well with her sassy, spirited personality!  I must admit, I specifically picked that particular sack pack for her for Christmas last year, knowing how well it would match with her favorite flames Converse.

Way to go ladies!  You're such an inspiration to be well put together!

Voila! The Vest!

Some simple outfits I've been piecing together lately go right along with my motto ~

Boots, class, and a little bit of sass!

For warmth, I layered a tee under a long sleeve, tunic length shirt.  I finished it with a structured vest, a voluptuous scarf and complementary accessories.

Behold, the Vest!

I was wearing the above middle outfit at a potluck luncheon and chatting with my classy fashion friend when I discovered her affinity for vests.

She affirmed, "The vest really adds a lot to an outfit."  Having thrifted a few vests to add some spice to her closet, she found herself donning her new-to-her pieces frequently.

Try adding a vest today!  They're an inexpensive way to add interest, structure, warmth and style.

Thrifting Tips for all my Busy People!

Thrifting is a perpetual treasure hunt.  I rarely find exactly what I'm looking for at the exact moment I want it, but I frequently find useful or classy things that save us money in the long run.  Keep in mind though, these finds are spread out over years of thrifting.

I do often leave a thrift store empty handed.

#1 ~ Prep yourself that you might not find anything.
I remind myself that I'm there for useful, quality and classy items.  If I don't find those or they aren't in my acceptable price range, I don't buy anything.  I'm not just going in for retail therapy.

#2 ~ Check what you need or what you will need soon.
If I know my husband needs cargo shorts, I check the men's shorts section.  If I know Blossom1 could use some dresses, I check the dresses, but I'm prepared to find those things over a quick stop at Goodwill here or a last minute post-library stop at the Salvation Army store there.

Rarely do I have time for a full store overhaul.

Short trips make me feel like I haven't wasted time.

#3 ~ Check your size or your favorite colors.
Different thrift stores organize things differently.  I quickly rifle through my favorite colors, which are jewel tones and pick from those, OR I find my size and start a quick search there, based on patterns and materials that always catch me eye... like denim or nautical navy blue and white stripes.

#5 ~ Check what matches your family's lifestyle and interests.
The Rugged Mountain Man loves taking the girls hunting, but that's a lot of gear over the growing years.  I now know to watch out for mandatory orange items and camouflage items.  I also know that the girls need Carhart-type work clothes and coats for chores, so I automatically check anything that looks like it might be suitable for those things.

What that means is, I walk quickly down an aisle, alertly perusing the contents, only stopping for something that catches my eye.  I also stick my army on it.

"Keep your eyes out for __________, girls!"

They do a great job!

Favorite Thrift Store Finds
(some of my favorite thrift store finds over the years)

#5 ~ Feel things.
The Rugged Mountain Man likes quality wool pieces and I like leather, so I brush through the coat or sweater aisle and "feel things."  Often, that's how I know to stop and check tags and sizes.

Sometimes I walk in and check ONE section... that's it!

Thrifting isn't a one time event.  In fact, some of my least successful trips are when I stop once, thinking I'm going to find all the stuff I need.  Just pop in here and there and take a gander around the store!

Fast Fashion

I had some fun wearing my bargain Buffalo plaid duster to co-op the other day.
A Day in the Buffalo Plaid Life

I also noticed that some friends had great outfits on lately too.

Terrific Tunic

Plaid and Duck Boots

Then, there's my brand-new-to-me caramel leather jacket that I swiped in a five minute thrift store trip the other day.  It's so buttery soft and perfect fitting that I feel like it's my birthday!

For a Soccer Game

I think a woman puts her best foot forward when she is well put together at all times.
She respects herself.
She respects her Creator.
She even shows respect of others when she is tidy and makes an effort in her wardrobe.
To a Soccer Game

I grabbed basic pieces from my closet to make up this fun Autumn outfit for watching a friend's soccer game recently.

The outfit would have been equally fun with a denim vest or regular denim jacket or gray denim jacket.  Or, maybe, corduroy or flannel are your thing!  That would work too!

I'm teaching the Blossoms to work with what's in YOUR closet, not what's on your Amazon wish list or Pinterest Style board.  It's contentment in action and it's thrifty too!

Dominique

PS - All the items in that outfit were either thrifted, gifted, from Walmart or hand-me-downs, which is proof positive that it doesn't take a lot of money to be well put together.

Bargain Buffalo Plaid

When my bargain Buffalo plaid duster came in the mail, I wanted to wear it with something other than skinny jeans and a black tee.

After a quick perusal of Pinterest for inspiration, I snagged my black pencil skirt and a black tee with shirred neckline.

Buffalo Plaid Duster

I borrowed my black wedge sandals back from Blossom1 and paired it with a favorite filigree pendant on a long silver chain.  The Rugged Mountain Man bought it for me ages ago.  I added in some filigree earrings, given to me by a friend.  They matched perfectly, even though they aren't a matched set.

It was the best kind of outfit ~ made up of closet staples and favorites.  Plus, it looked a little Autumn-esque with the Buffalo plaid, whilst tipping my hat to summer in wedge sandals.

My dad made a crack about me wearing a picnic tablecloth, but I don't mind.  That's how Dad tells me he loves me - with jokes.

Ladies, scour your closet and put those bargains with staples and favorites for something fresh, fun and budget-friendly!

Thoughts on the Swimsuit Dilemma

After my sister shared a pretty swimsuit she'd found in her Amazon trolling and my very old swimsuit demanded to be replaced, I decided to give a long sleeved swimsuit a try.  I'd since started wearing an under armor type shirt over my old suit, along with a little skirt.  I felt more comfortable than ever, when hanging out waterside.  It was so much closer to my normal summer standard of clothing.

I haven't regretted this AT ALL.

I'm not hot.  I get in the water more because I care far less about water temperature.  I use little to no sunscreen.  I'm comfortable around other pool-goers.  What a fabulous decision!

Also, this year, when doing the Blossoms' swimsuit inventory, we ordered Blossom1's from Amazon.  It was under $30 and modest.  She had been gifted the same suit previously by a family friend.  She LOVED IT and then outgrew it.

This year, she elected to simply order the next size up.  It was a slam dunk!

Because Blossom2 adored my flashy taste in my gymnastics days, she raided my old leotard stash and added a pair of active shorts for the bottoms to complete her ensemble.  This was a great choice for her.  She is super active.

I can see that most leotards seem to hold up just as well as any other swimsuits out there. For future purchases, I'll definitely keep my eyes out for leotards as more modest swimsuit options.

Though I was prepared to purchase a new number for Blossom3, she loved her sister's leotard idea so much that she raided the dress-up bin for this cute 90s style number.

All the suits seemed worn out by the time they got to Blossom4.  This happens often!  I was loving my own long sleeved swimsuit so much that I searched Amazon again for something pixie-sized.  She's thrilled to pieces with this little set, and I am pleased with how much less sunscreen I have to use on her.

I wanted to share some of these options because modest swimsuits are not impossible in this day and age.  Sometimes, we just gotta think outside the box.

A Moment for Icing

Remember what I said about hand-me-downs?  Well, the other day a friend handed me this brand new long black kimono while another friend exclaimed nearby, "That is SO Dominique!"  I just beamed and said, "WOW, thanks!"

Turquoise Love

I thoroughly enjoyed selecting items from my closet to fashion a whole new outfit.  It really only takes a few more moments to gather those fun finishing touches.

Kimono: Hand-me-down gift
Shirt, jeans, boots, brooch: Thrift store
Bracelet and Earrings: Gift
(I always like to share that information because I want everyone to know that it costs very little to look well-put-together!!)

Next time you get dressed, take a moment to select a few basic pieces from your closet.  Then, choose a piece or two of jewelry that is complimentary and go for it!  It's worth those extra moments to put the "icing" on the cake!

Whole Lotta Class

At our Poetry Performance practice the other day, a friend of mine walked in wearing this outfit.  It was so classy, that I had to share it with you!

Pearls aren't Pretentious

It also caught my eye because she layered a scarf over a long pearl necklace.  It didn't look pretentious or over done.  Instead, it said "well coordinated and well put together" to me.

I love how she mixed and matched basic pieces to pack a "whole lotta class" in one ensemble.

Now, please excuse me while I go dig out a scarf and pearl necklace to wear to church tomorrow.

Classy Pearls

I think Jackie O said it best!

A flowy gray hand-me-down poncho shirt, black skinny jeans and gifted suede over the knee boots are paired with a triple strand of pearls for a simple and pretty church outfit.
Simple is classy, friends!

Never Been Too Proud for Hand-Me-Downs

It's been a while since I've shared an outfit, hasn't it? I like to come around to these posts every now and again, so we all remember that being well put together doesn't mean we have to be big fashion spenders.

I wore this outfit around the house and to drop the girls off to skit practice.  It's one of my favorites!  I felt well put together and that always helps me forget about what I'm wearing and focus on the tasks at hand.

~The gray Mama Bear hooded t-shirt was a hand-me-down and so was the Old Navy white buffalo plaid flannel shirt.  Shout out to my sis-in-law and sis for sharing their castoff goodies with me!
~The jeans were from a sale ages ago.
~The purse was a Christmas present from my Mom several years ago.  I picked it out from Amazon.
~The gray socks were actually sleeves cut off a thrifted sweater to give the scrunched sock effect above my boots.  I call them "bargain boot cuffs!"
~The hat is a $2.97 Walmart purchase that sees a lot of action.
~The earrings were actually a set that the Blossoms made for me.
~The duck boots were my birthday present from the Rugged Mountain Man this year. He got them on sale.

If you take away the socks, earrings and hat, you'll notice the outfit seems to lack pizzazz.

I've found that looking well put together has a lot to do with taking that extra five seconds to put on a pair of earrings.  It's grabbing boot cuffs that match whatever you're wearing.  It's taking five more seconds to snag a baseball hat that complements what I have on.

It says to every one else, "I may be busy, but I tried." And yes, I'm not to proud for hand-me-downs.  They too can be the building blocks of great outfits!

To the Dentist

Happy summer day, friends!

One of my favorite topics that I've written about here is being well put together.  I still believe that dressing with excellence is a way to show respect for yourself, but more importantly, it demonstrates respect for your Creator.  You're a masterpiece, friend, why would you treat yourself like a cast-off?

I recently had some technical trouble with those posts and enjoyed perusing them again as I repaired them.  I thought you might like to take a gander at the Well Put Together section

We also trekked to the dentist office on this chilly morning, so I broke out a pair of denim capris, a brown structured cargo jacket and some jewelry with pizzazz to do my mama duties.
Dressing well helps me forget about what I'm wearing and focus on the task at hand.  Hope you enjoy a stroll down DominiqueSpeaks memory lane.

Oh, and the Fourth of July is coming up... perhaps you'll find some patriotic inspiration here too.

This is How We Co-op

With the autumn weather and the physical demands on me, gettin' ready for co-op on Wednesday mornings has made me work a little harder within the confines of my closet.  Anybody can hop on Amazon and order the missing pieces for an outfit.  Click.  Click. Magic...

but I challenge myself again and again to take the pieces I own
and put them together with functional class.

I've heard in the fashion world that you ought to dress the body you have.  It makes sense.  Take care of what you have, treat it with respect and you will continue to make good decisions in regards to your healthy habits.

If you feel and look frumpy,
you'll continue to make frump-inducing decisions.

From a Christian viewpoint, my body is the house that God lives in.  I aim to care for it well and dress it with modesty and excellence.

This convictions drives me as I dress every day, no matter who is or isn't coming over, whether I am or am not going out.

If the furthest I go is the school room and the kitchen, I go with a clear conscience, knowing my outfit is modest and excellent.  And when I venture further, I can think about what I need to accomplish and being a blessing to others, rather than worrying about what I have on.

A truly functional, classy outfit, slides into the background.

A truly functional, classy outfit lets me do what I have to do without worrying about what I have on.

I can focus on tending my Blossoms.  I can pay attention to co-op logistics.  I can tie knots with kids.  I can snap photos while they build shelters.  I can give a hug to a friend in need.  I can kneel in the grass with a friend's little one.  I can smile, laugh, be flexible, do head counts, haul gear and do all that "nothing" that is really something.

I can do all that with excellence and modesty.

Yes, I'm still mixing and matching the "same-old, same-old" pieces, but it's been a fun challenge to practice contentment both in my wardrobe and in my body.

Fun for the Fourth

I do love July, especially the Fourth.  Combined with the exquisitely flavored chicken that the men of the family cook over the pit all morning and the fluffy blueberry dessert that my mother-in-law always makes, the food is just the cherry on top of a day of fellowship and fun.

In the spirit of some patriotic fun, I'm sharing a recent addition to my wardrobe.
It's in honor of our upcoming 15th wedding anniversary!

Hurray for eBay, which enabled me to score vintage, barely worn cowboy boots at a fraction of the cost.  I'm still grinning when I look at them.
Something memorable for a major and memorable milestone!

I'm feeling pretty good about these boots, as I know myself and my style better than ever.  I've loved boots since I was five year old.  If I haven't gotten over them by now, I probably won't.  And, being that my mom and grandma are still dressin' Western,
I'm pretty sure there's no hope for me or the girls.

While I waited for them to arrive, I jumped on Pinterest, looking for outfit inspiration and was surprised to find that there wasn't much there.  Most of it was pretty straightforward, like wear them with a white dress and a denim jacket.  I could've thought of that.  I go to Pinterest for "Oh, I've never thought to wear them with that!" kind of outfit inspiration.

On the other hand, many of the outfits went too over the top with the red.  Ya'll, if you're gonna wear something like RED cowboy boots, you'd better be prepared to tone down everything else.  And, red, red, RED gets all up in your face.  You'll find most of these outfits are a bit toned down in the jewelry department.  It's like statement boots, instead of a statement necklace; at least, that's how I'm looking at it.

Just in wearing these boots in the last few weeks, I've been delighted to confirm my suspicions.
Much like my red sandals, they complement a number of classic pieces already in my wardrobe.

I've spent years thrifting and investing to acquire classic pieces.  The little bit of money I do spend on fashion, I don't generally spend on trendy stuff.

There's something to be said for knowing what you like
and putting it together in the best way you can.

Being well put together shouldn't mean just buying more clothes or jewelry.

Being well put together is taking the pieces you've got
and making them work to reflect you,
your convictions,
your taste
and your life.

Whether it's the park, Wal-Mart, church, a wedding or even the Fair,
these boots are workin' for me!

And hey, like my sister-in-law said, these boots are just in time for the Fourth!

Enjoy your Independence Day, friends!

A Weekend of People

You'd think a yard sale would be about money, or maybe money and junk, but our little Hollow's yard sale was about people.

What began as Sue's idea, grew into a seven family undertaking in our little back road community.  Four close neighbors, two "extended" neighbors and one honorary neighbor banded together to finally get rid of our stuff.  And we sure had a good time doin' it.

I'm telling you, our junk shedding weekend was worth it for every bit of community we experienced.

I knew it was gonna be a fun kind of yard sale, when my neighbor dropped off a hay wagon at my place, so I could load my stuff at my convenience.  Hay wagons make instant yard sale tables, ya'll.

You probably recognize this green and gold beauty from the time our trusty neighbor helped us out when the Rugged Mountain Man wasn't feeling well and our yard was turning into a hay field.

He also broke out his vintage John Deere to haul the hay wagon down the hill to the yard sale site and volunteered his flat ground by the creek and road for our yard sale.  It's much more visible from the road than my driveway, which I will note, I once dubbed "El Diablo," Spanish for "the devil."

The Blossoms and I enjoyed our ride down to the yard sale site so much that our little Hollow may have a neighborhood hay ride in its future this fall.  You can bet that Sue and I will be working on that one!

De-cluttering, letting go and de-junking were the creed for the week leading up to the sale.  It felt so good to be letting go; even the Blossoms said so.  This was really the first time that they looked at their possessions and successfully weeded out some of them.  I felt like we made real progress there.  We re-homed an entire trash bag of stuffed animals, after having a little photo shoot to help us say good-bye to a few that were on the borders of sentimental territory.

Each morning started bright and early for me.  Though the weather was chillier than of late, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices." The girlies and I dressed for the weather and were able to enjoy the people, instead of shivering and complaining about being in the elements.  I'm glad; I really didn't want to have to suffer through two long days.

I'm also super thankful for how much help the Blossoms were, especially Blossom1.  She did a two mini-baby-siting stints when I headed down the hill to open my tents and uncover our stuff at the crack of I'm-up-before-the-rooster.

I was impressed that she toted her sisters down the hill, well-wrangled and dressed appropriately.  I had my cell phone and she also had the panic button on my keys in case of emergency.  It was a good and comfortable rung in her ladder of independence.

We set up in the rain and the forecast looked bad for Friday.  I'll admit, we did pray hard about that.  Our little city of tents was chock full of yard sale gold that fared well both days, even in the light rain of Saturday.

That was quite an improvement from the original forecast.  We were all breathing prayers of gratitude on that score.  I'm happy to say that we had steady traffic both days and we did very well for a back road sale.

For all the planning of our yard sale, one thing I wasn't too concerned about was how to entertain the thirteen children we have between all of us.  I mean, we were setting up by a creek and woods.

That's the world's best free entertainment.

Those kids kept themselves busy the entire time.  Many of them were wet, even though it was 50 degrees out most of the weekend.

With waders, rubber boots, sticks, teamwork and great gusto, they engineered a log bridge across the creek so they could roam the wooded hillside.

That log bridge made my jaw drop and then, break into a wide grin.

Getting to spend two+ days chatting with each other was absolutely AWESOME.  The Dunkin Donuts deliveries were a huge plus too.

We are all different and yet, we savored the fellowship of each family.  Yep, lots of stuff headed out and the rest was hauled away later, but the camaraderie was a treasured time for me.

Though I was exhausted, I sighed with satisfaction at the end of the day.  It's funny to think that a yard sale was such an amazing experience of community and relationship building, but it was.

I like this quote my sister shared with me,

"Love people, use things," never the other way around.

PS - That's not all my stuff on the wagon, I really did get rid of my junk.  It's what's left of seven families worth of stuff!
